1. Banking
The Department of Banking and Finance
offers a wide range of elective courses through its
collaborative agreement with the Canadian Securities
Institute (CSI). Students who complete the four core
courses of the MS degree program and successfully
complete three elective CSI courses will obtain a
professional diploma called the Associate of the
Institute of Canadian Bankers (AICB). This professional
certification has proven to be very helpful to graduates
in securing outstanding international positions in
banking.
2. Investment Appraisal and Risk
Analysis
Students who successfully complete
FINA 521 (Investment Appraisal), FINA 522 (Project
Finance and Risk Management), and FINA 623 (Advanced
Capital Budgeting) will be eligible to take the
comprehensive examination offered by Queen’s University,
Canada,
to obtain a professional certification in Investment
Appraisal and Risk Analysis. This professional program
on the appraisal of investment projects was founded in
1985 at Harvard University and was offered there until
2000. Since then has been conducted at Queen’s
University, Canada and Duke University, USA. To date
there are over 2000 graduates of the program from over
50 countries. It has become the gold standard for
academic and professional training in this field and it
is highly sought after by employers internationally.

Finance and Risk Management
Students who wish to become financial
analysts, financial advisors, professionals working in
the capital market or related areas, should consider
building an area of specialization in finance and risk
management. An illustrative set of courses are as
follows: BANK 501 (Asset and Liability Management), FINA
517 (Corporate Finance), FINA 503 (Investments), and
FINA 522 (Project Finance and Risk Analysis). This area
of specialization should be considered by individuals
who wish to take the examination leading to the
Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) designation.

person can cover the curriculum required as preparation
for the first level of CFA examinations
